Located in downtown Tampa, FL, Howard W. Blake High School for the Fine Arts is home to the Blake Theater Department. The department produces four main stage productions throughout the school year, one senior showcase, one summer production, and a full palate of smaller events for the school, community, and National Thespian Society competition, including one one-act production. Mission Statement
To introduce and further educate the students enrolled in any arm of the H.W. Blake H.S. Fine Art's Theater Department on the intricacies of the theater in order to give graduating students a competitive edge in the theater community.
Faculty
Jim Rayfield (Acting) - James Rayfield has been a theater educator for over thirty years. He received his BA in English form Florida State University and his MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he has studied with Viola Spolin in Los Angles. He has directed high school
productions that have been presented at the Florida State Thespian
Festival. In addition he has directed for The Playmakers, The Loft,
Stageworks, and the Ensemble Theater Company. As an actor he has
appeared at USF, HCC, The Playmakers, Stageworks, and last year he
starred in a "mock documentary" film by Gordon Mhyer titled "Artie Infinger, A Portrait." He has published five plays for teens which have received productions all over the United States and as far away as Canada and South Africa. He has recently had several short pieces produced by Tampa Tongues, The Loft, and Stageworks. He has also had short pieces produced Off-Broadway at the Expaned Arts Theatre and the Manhattan Class Company. In 1992 he was selected as Theatre Educator of the Year by the Florida Association of Theatre Educators and in 1994 he was voted Best Local Playwright by Creative Loafing. In 1997 he was selected as Outstanding Arts Educator by the Weekly Planet.
Eric Davis (Musical Theater) - Eric Davis was the founder and Artistic Director of the Reno Sparks Group Theatre in Reno, Nevada where he garnered much praise for his innovative direction and choreography. He is the recipient of many awards including the prestigious "First Level Award" from the National Foundation For Advancement in the Arts.
Since 1994 Eric has directed and/or choreographed some 26 professional productions of plays and musicals including Forever Plaid, Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Whirligig, and Christopher Marlowe's Dr. Faustus.
He attended Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle where he studied theatre, dance, and voice. As an actor, Eric has worked at numerous regional theatres including, The Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, The Nevada Opera, Reno Little Theatre, Center Theatre Company at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, American Cabaret Theatre, The Melodrama Musical Theatre, The Great American Melodrama, Bruka Theatre Company, Off-Broadstreet Theatre, Stages Productions, Nevada Children's Theatre, and Nevada Repertory Company. Favorite roles include Ebenezer Scrooge in The Center Theatre Company's production of A Christmas Carol, Smudge in Forever Plaid, Dr. Einstein in Arsenic and Old Lace, and Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Eric has also performed with such notable personalities as The Smothers Brothers and Toni Tennille.
As a member of the Dramatists Guild of America he has written several plays and musicals, including Patsy Cline: A Life in Concert (with Melissa Kenney), and Wonderland! - a new rock musical version of Alice in Wonderland which received its premier production at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in 1999
Greg Bierce (Technical Theater) - Trained at the University of Florida in Architectural Design and Theater Production, Mr. Bierce has been working in Professional / Academic Theater, Television and Film for the past ten years. He has worked at such venues as The Gainesville Center for the Performing Arts (Fl.), The Hippodrome (Fl.), The Weston Playhouse (Vt.), The Geffen Playhouse (Ca.), Circle X Theater (Ca.), U.C.L.A. School of Film Television and Theater (Ca.), MTV-Motel California, MTV Video Music Awards (Metro Scenery)(Ca.), The Pantages- Phantom of the Opera (Ca.), and has several film credits including "Mondays Child" (Sundance Film Festival). Mr. Bierce is currently looking forward to his second year as Technical Director in the Blake theater department.

Main Stage - A proscenium stage seating 400 in the orchestra and 200 in the balcony, the Main Stage is the home to more mainstream theatrical productions including large cast plays and large staged musicals. With 35 linesets, 400 lighting circuits, a hydraulic orchestra pit, and state of the art equipment, the Main Stage is a beautiful performance space.
Multi-Form Theater - A more alternative production space, this 50' by 50' black box theater can seat up to 250 and is home to the Theater Department's smaller productions.
Thespian Troupe #5742
As a theater honor society, membership into the National Thespian Society is a privilege bestowed on the student who is dedicated to the stage. With this love and perseverance, our local troupe participates in many competitions throughout the year on both district and state levels, receiving many honors and recognitions.
